Located on Percy Street in Nottingham, the E-Hubs Project Mural celebrates mobility, connectivity and community through an impactful visual statement in stone. Co-designed by pupils from Old Basford Primary School and Leonard Design Architects, under the expertise of Senior Associate, Rudi Marecki, the mural is embedded within Nottingham City Council’s ambition for vibrant and inclusive public infrastructure. Hardscape Surfaces was commissioned to manufacture the floral mural, translating the intricate vision into durable, high-quality granite sections, collaborating with Leonard Design Architects and Nottingham City Council to bring it to life. Collaboration & Technical Manufacturing From the outset, Hardscape Surfaces worked closely with Leonard Design’s Nottingham studio and the client team to interpret the mural’s story representing energy, movement and urban regeneration into the material and fabrication palette. The floral mural was co-designed with pupils from Old Basford Primary School as part of Nottingham City Council’s Mobility Hub works. The facility is one of six initial sites that have been introduced across Nottingham using funding from the Future Transport Zones (FTZ) programme, which is a joint project with Derby City Council. Hardscape Surfaces team developed full General Arrangement drawings for each section of the complex design, enabling meticulous planning of the layout, finishes and transitions. Skilled masons at our Hardscape Surfaces factory executed the design using a combination of Crystal Black and Royal White granites in polished, honed and sandblasted finishes. Stencil-based sandblasting highlighted intricate lines and patterns, creating the graphic contrast required by the design. Manufacturing and finish were supported by our CAD and production teams to ensure accuracy and continuity. Outcome At installation, the mural seamlessly integrates with the E-Hubs infrastructure, forming a bold visual anchor for the hub and celebrating Nottingham’s ambition for sustainable, connected urban mobility. The mural itself forms part of the Percy Street Mobility (E-Hubs) Hub and is intended to provide a welcoming, community-focused public space. It celebrates community, mobility and greening visually anchoring the hub and reflecting local identity (the pupils also helped with planting). The hub itself supports active and shared travel (e-bikes, e-scooters, EV charging, secure cycle parking, seating, landscaping). Hardscape Surfaces’ technical capability, manufacturing expertise and collaborative approach ensured the design vision translated into a stunning reality, with materials that not only perform, but tell a story of place and progress. The E-Hubs Project Mural stands as strong proof of how design ambition, material excellence and technical collaboration converge. Through our partnership with Leonard Design Architects and Nottingham City Council, Hardscape Surfaces delivered a landmark feature that enriches public realm, supports active travel infrastructure and endures with quality craftsmanship.
