Bespoke Craftsmanship for an Iconic Street
Newcastle’s historic Grey Street has been transformed into a greener, more welcoming and people-focused destination, completing a major phase of the city centre’s regeneration in 2024. The scheme has widened pedestrian areas, introduced new rain gardens and planting, improved active travel connections and created new opportunities to sit, meet and enjoy one of the city’s most celebrated streets.
Bespoke Seating with a Local Story
A key element of the new public realm is a collection of bespoke benches designed by LDA Design to reflect the history and character of Grey Street. The seating incorporates motifs and stories relating to businesses and people associated with the street, adding a layer of local identity to the landscape.
Hardscape Surfaces played a specialist role in bringing this detail to life. Crosland Hill Classic Buff sandstone bench ends were precision etched and painted with bespoke lettering, creating distinctive stone components ready for Urban Concepts to combine with FSC Iroko timber slats and bronze armrests.
The result is a series of unique benches that bring together natural stone, skilled surface craftsmanship, timber and metalwork, creating functional pieces of street furniture with a strong sense of place.
A Greener, More Inclusive Grey Street
The wider transformation places people and nature at the centre of Grey Street, with generous new footways, accessible seating and rain gardens providing sustainable drainage while increasing biodiversity. The improvements also strengthen the connection between the city centre and Quayside.
